Designing a product so it can actually be made — well, reliably, and affordably.
Design for manufacturing — usually shortened to DFM — means designing a product with how it will be made firmly in mind, not just how it should look or function. A design can work perfectly on screen and still be hard, expensive, or unreliable to produce. DFM closes that gap: it shapes the design so the product can be made well, consistently, and at a sensible cost. The earlier it's applied, the more it's worth.
What DFM Looks At
Why It Matters Early
A large share of a product's cost and manufacturability is locked in during design. Changing a design early is cheap; changing it after tooling and production is expensive. Applying DFM before you commit is where it pays off most.
Good on Screen Isn't Good to Make
A model can look finished and still carry problems a factory will hit — features that can't be molded or machined easily, tolerances that are hard to hold, assemblies that fight the person building them. DFM catches those before they become quotes and defects.
It Serves Cost and Quality Both
Designing for manufacturing tends to lower cost and improve quality at once, because simpler, well-suited designs are both cheaper to make and less prone to problems. It's rarely a trade-off.
